Intercessory Prayer Ministry
Mrs. Burton Shields, Director

The goal of the Intercessory Prayer Ministry is to pray faithfully and consistently for the needs of people around the world 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A special room has been designed and built for prayer with convenient access.

How It Works:

Volunteers commit to giving one hour each week in the prayer room.  When someone makes a commitment to a particular hour, (see “How to Get Involved” below) that hour is reserved for them.  Each of our prayer intercessors comes to the prayer room for a private hour of prayer.  In the room there are thousands of prayer requests including the names of missionaries and special needs that have come to us from around the world.  Many of the requests have been submitted by email or by phone.  Others have been submitted on one of our prayer request cards or put in the room by one of the intercessors.

How To Get Involved:

Call Burton Shields at 264-7729.  Please leave a message and she will return your call, or email her by clicking on her name.  You will be asked to attend an orientation session to introduce you to the Prayer Ministry.  Mrs. Shields will explain the time schedule for this orientation. You will be provided materials to familiarize you with the Biblical principles of prayer and the practical methods of praying for the needs of others.

How To Submit a Prayer Request:

  1. If you attend Mount Vernon Church you will find a prayer request form in each pew in the main worship center. Forms are located next to the Prayer Room, also.  The form may be completed and dropped in the box next to the prayer room or placed in an offering plate during a worship service.
  2. You may send an email to the prayer room (click here to send an email) with information on the need for prayer.  Please be as specific as possible and let us know if the prayer request is for yourself or another person.
  3. Or, please call our 24 hour prayer line at 828-264-PRAY (7729).  If no one is able to answer your call at the moment, please leave your name and your request on our voice mail, giving as much information as possible.

Your prayer requests will be handled confidentially and compassionately.  If you would like us to send prayergrams to you or to the person we are praying for, please let us know and provide a current address. Prayergrams are brief notes of encouragement which are sent only with your permission.

It happened that while Jesus was

praying in a certain place,

after He had finished,

one of His disciples said to Him,

"Lord, teach us to pray

just as John also taught his disciples."
